What Is Injection Moulding?

In dentistry, injection moulding is a technique used to create precise, natural-looking composite restorations – such as veneers – with minimal or no damage to the natural tooth surface. It involves injecting a high-quality flowable composite resin into a mould that has been custom-designed to fit your ideal smile shape.

This method allows for incredibly accurate results, with a smooth, even finish and predictable aesthetics.

How Does the Process Work?

Here’s a general overview of how injection moulding is carried out:

Smile Design & Planning

Using digital scans or impressions, we design your desired tooth shape and smile alignment with the help of a 3D mock-up.

Custom Mould Creation

A clear silicone or plastic stent (mould) is created based on the design, fitting perfectly over your teeth.

Tooth Preparation (if needed)

In most cases, very little or no enamel needs to be removed, making it a highly conservative treatment.

Composite Injection

A flowable composite resin is then injected into the mould, which sits snugly over your teeth, ensuring the resin fills the precise space needed to shape your new smile. Similar to pouring wax into a candle mould!

Curing and Polishing

Once the resin is hardened using a special curing light, the mould is removed, and the final touches are polished for a beautiful, natural finish.

What Are the Benefits of Injection Moulding?

  • Minimally invasive – often no drilling or anaesthetic required

  • Highly precise and predictable results

  • Natural-looking finish with great texture and shine

  • Cost-effective compared to porcelain veneers

  • Reversible in many cases – especially if no enamel is removed

  • Ideal for smile makeovers, closing gaps, or reshaping worn teeth

Is Injection Moulding Right for Me?

Injection moulding is perfect for patients looking for a conservative yet transformative cosmetic treatment. It’s especially useful if you want to:

  • Improve the shape or symmetry of your teeth

  • Close small gaps

  • Repair worn or chipped edges

  • Enhance your smile without committing to porcelain veneers

However, it’s not always suitable for more complex cases or for teeth with severe discolouration or misalignment. During your consultation at Lady Bay Dental Care, we’ll assess your smile and talk through the best options for you!
